Lesson Plans

What type of format do you use when writing lesson plans? Why do you do it that way?

Sitting in my first Teaching Science/Technology Class! I am sooooo excited.

How do you teach science in your classroom? Do you have a favorite topic you like to teach? Is there something you struggle to teach?

Student teaching begins on Monday!!!! eeek!!!!

Hey everyone. I start student teaching on Monday in a fifth grade classroom. Do you have any suggestions on what to do to make a really good first impression? Do you have any suggestions on what I should bring with me?

Good morning everyone. I saw this on an education blog with the question: Do you have a trick or tip for quieting down your class?

It made me a bit nervous and gave me flashbacks to corporal punishments in schools. I am lucky to have never been on the giving nor recieving end of it, but was surprised to hear that it still exists in many of todays school systems. I am a believer that one should not use physical, emotional, mental, or emotional abuse in the classroom, or anywhere else for that matter, in order to get children to learn.
Here is a wiki site talking about it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/School_corporal_punishment
For those of you who don’t believe wiki is a reliable source here is a time article from 2009 on the subject: http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1915820,00.html

The Lesson Plan Diva: Main Idea

I have been meaning to post some of the things that we have been working lately, sorry I am so behind! Last week we were working on main idea and supporting details. We worked on several stories that the kids did an awesome job on. So we made this anchor chart together explaining how supporting details work.
Next we used this awesome graphic organizer from Brain pop with a story we had just written as a class. We wrote the main idea on the top and the supporting details on the legs. It really helped the kids get a visual of how supporting details work.

The kids liked this game!  They each come up and pick a stick out of my hand and they would have to place it in the right cup!  If there’s extra time, they can use the word in a sentence:)

I would add: have the students act out the word or a sentence with the word in it. This enables a theater/ kinesthetic approach to this activity.

Her strategies are simply amazing. The way the class is captivated by her and how she captures those teachable moments are simply impeccable. I am definitely stealing some of her ideas. What a wonderful teacher!

I want to be her!

Cooking in the Classroom

I know allergies are a major concern but the mathematic/cultural/sensory experiences from it are irreplaceable in my opinion.

How do all of you feel about cooking in the classroom?

Dance and it’s Connections to Classroom!

Try to use dance as a way to teach your students:

  1. About another culture (history)
  2. How to skip numbers (math)
  3. The way a graphs work (math)
  4. Terminology of words in different cultures (language)
  5. How systems such as photosynthesis or respiratory function (science)
  6. How to work in a team or a pair (problem solving/communication skills)

Music in the classroom!

I would love to have instruments from many different cultures in my classroom. Where do you get cheap instruments to keep in an everyday elementary classroom?

Using license plates for history classes.
